Diecast of the Day: UT Models Ford Escort Cosworth

Like most of my diecast purchases, I became smitten with the real car first. In Europe, Ford is a much different company than it is stateside. Here, when someone mentions a Ford performance car, it's more often than not going to be the Mustang. If soeone in Europe mentions "Ford" and "performance car" in the same sentence, a variety of different cars come to mind. From the Fiesta XR2, to the Sierra RS Cosworth and everything in between, Ford was, and is a mainstay in European performance wars.
If you're a car nut, you've probably heard of the Focus RS, yes? Okay, good. Then you've heard of its forerunner, the Escort Cosworth most likely. For those not in the know, the Escort Coworth, or Cossie as it's commonly called was the first major breakthrough in establishing Ford's status in the AWD Supercar game. Coming out within the same timeframe as its JDM rivals, the Subaru Impreza WRX/STi, and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, this force-fed Ford (say that three times fast!) packed a 227 horse turbo four, did well against its competitors, even scaring a few Porsche 993s here and there.
This scale model, made by UT Models, is a very good primitive diecast. The hood, and doors open, but they are extremely fragile. Unfortunately, the hatch does not, although, that's probably a good thing, due to its age.
The paint and body detail are pretty good for what you get, though the badging isn't all there. Likewise, the interior doesn't have all the detail you'd expect in a model of this day and age What it lacks in the fine details, it makes up for in subject matter.
Now, with model companies focusing on what makes money versus what an enthusiast wants, models of cult cars are getting harder to come by. I, for one, love these "cult cars". I've always been into force-fed performance out of fewer than eight cylinders, and cars like this make me grin from ear to ear. Eat your heart out, Ford people, because finding an UT Cossie is getting harder and harder. And I have one.
