New Cars for 2009/2010: Pontiac G8

New for 2008, Pontiac reintroduced a RWD performance car to the market. Based on GM's own Holden Commodore, the new G8 replaces both the family-oriented Bonneville and the performance minded GTO. With seating for 5 and a choice of a V6 or two V8s, it's clear this car is aimed at performance-minded drivers, people who are perhaps considering a Mercedes or BMW. The base version has a 3.6 V6 producing 300 HP, and the GT has a 361 HP 6.0 V8. That still not enough? Perhaps you should consider the GXP with its 415 HP 6.2 LS3 V8. Since it's a performance vehicle, fuel consumption is not a main concern when buying one of these, but GM did its best to be sure it wasn't a total pig when it comes to the matter. The base version should get around 24 MPG combined, with the GT and GXP netting 18 to 23 MPG. Not bad, when you consider at this price point there are very few four doors that can run with it performance-wise save for the new Hyundai Genesis.
So, does it succeed? That question is for you to answer. If you fancy a RWD car, with the heart of a Lion and the proven dynamics found down under , your car is here. But you better get it fast. GM's announcement of Pontiac's death seems to have done NOTHING to move these cars off the showroom floor. And that's quite sad consider how good of a car this really is. For $30,000, you can't go wrong.
