Lawrence Street Sighting: Ford Escort GT

During the Ford Escort's heyday, Ford produced a version it hoped would spawn a cult following, much like that of the Civic Si; it worked-- sort of. While the Civic Si was wildly popular among various fanbases, the Escort GT isn't as such. Like the Hondas, the Escorts rusted out fast over the rear wheelwells, and in the doors too. Like the Civic, the Escort GT was available in a two-door coupe bodystyle. Also, likes its' Civic competition, the Escort GT was quite potent from the factory. That's where the similarities end, however. While the Civic Si was a hatchback at first, there was a Si coupe later on in life; meanwhile, the Escort GT was always a three-door hatchback, available with either a 5 spd stickshift, or a three-or-four speed automatic.
Tragically, this faded red example is probably the nicest 1991-1996 car I have seen to date; it isn't a rusted out hulk, it isn't riced, and it doesn't appear to have any ounce of tasteless aftermarket addons. What it lacks in aftermarket tackiness, though, it makes up for with its condition. Granted this is a stock example, it certainly has seen better days. The once-shiny red paint is now stale, in spots almost-but-not-quite pink. The interior, too, is pretty crusty although stock; not something I'd pay retail for.
Would I drive it? Probably. Would it need some work in order for me to drive it? Possibly. First thing I'd do is fix the paint, maybe do it up in cobalt blue, perhaps, with 1997-era Probe GT wheels powdercoated black. I'd fix the engine too. Howbout a 2.0 Ecoboost mated to a six-speed automatic from a Fiesta ST? Yeah, that'd do nicely.
