Boise Street Sighting: Porsche 928
While Boise does have it's share of certainly off-the-beaten-path vehicles, normal "classics" are also quite alive in this automotive "world of yesterday"; vehicles like mid 1980s Escort GTs (which I did blog), and Nash Metropolitans (saw too many to count) and every variety of foreign and domestic in between are quite common-- and in some neighborhoods, moreso than their contemporary replacements.
While I have always loved the Porsche 928, clean examples are hard to find; for reasons only Porsche purists can understand, the 928 isn't an enthusiast favorite to die-hard Porsche nuts. It has the engine in the wrong place, an automatic transmission is offered, and depending on which designer you believe, it was either inspired by the lowly Ford Sierra, or the Ford Sierra aped its rear window treatment. It doesn't help that they're often not quite the most reliable Porsche, as Top Gear would lead you to believe.
Tossing all the criticism aside, I absolutely love these cars, and I always have. As far back as I can remember, the 928 has always been a car that stood out to me; I think I liked the 928 for its roofline and odd-shaped windows. Perhaps that's also the reason the Subaru SVX is one of my favorites too. Whereas the 911 is purely Porsche in its aesthetics and engineering, the 928 breaks that mold; it doesn't scream "look at me--I'm a Porsche", nor does it have the rear engine configuration. Instead, it follows with the likes of the 924 and 944 and such-- front engine, rear wheel drive. But--staying true to Porsche heritage, it is a two seater. Because everyone knows a Porsche should have only two seats, right? Waitaminute.
Yes, I know the example shown above isn't in my favorite color, nor do I particularly like the rather bland stock wheels on this one either. Like most of my favorite cars, the 928 is a car I absolutely adore in period colors; make mine Mocha brown with matching checkered interior please. And for the love of god, make mine have teledials too. The 928 is nearly perfect as is, but with that slight change in color and spec, it would be even moreso.
